08 May 2019

CollegesWales Sport are excited to announce that they will host their first ever FE Multisport festival for FE colleges across the UK at Pembrey Country Park on Wednesday, 8 May 2019.

Working in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council, Welsh Triathlon, Welsh Cycling, AoC Sport and Coleg Sir Gâr, the cycling and multisport festival is aimed at competitive athletes and those looking to try multisport for the first time.

Building on the popularity of cycling and multisport events following the recent successes of Geraint Thomas and other Welsh and British athletes, the event provides a new competitive opportunity for FE learners, a pathway for aspiring athletes and a first attempt at multisport activity.

There are three race options available:

  1. A competitive multisport race of 5km run / 20km bike / 2.5k run
  2. A competitive cycling 10Km time trial
  3. A beginners multisport race of 1km run / 4km bike / 1km run

Making use of the new closed road cycling circuit at Pembrey with views of the fantastic surrounding parkland, the festival will provide a safe and challenging environment for everyone involved. Collaboratively, Carmarthenshire county council, Welsh Triathlon and Welsh Cycling will ensure this race is delivered in a professional manner with a gift pack thrown in.

Ian Jones, Head of Leisure Carmarthenshire County Council welcomed this opportunity and said “this new event in our sporting calendar builds on our ambition to be the “Cycling Hub for Wales”. Developing new multi – agency partnerships and events such as the FE Multisport Festival can only serve to enhance our ambition and encourage more young people to take advantage of the excellent facilities available.”

Beverley Lewis, CEO Welsh Triathlon added “We are really excited to be part of this new event that aims to increase physical activity participation amongst 16-24 year olds and develop a new workforce in the process. Working collaboratively with Welsh Cycling, ColegauCymru, Carmarthenshire Council, AoC Sport and Coleg Sir Gâr will help to broaden opportunities for young people and provide new volunteers for a growing event market in Wales.

Training, education and workforce development will also form a key part of the event with Coleg Sir Gâr learners training to become marshals, and provide event management assistance as part of their college studies. This training will be provided by Welsh Triathlon and will support the development of a future local workforce for events in Carmarthenshire.

Chief Executive of ColegauCymru, Iestyn Davies concluded “We are proud to be leading this collaborative innovative event, promoting new routes and widening access to sport and physical activity for FE learners in the UK. Whilst traditional sports continue to provide fantastic experiences for thousands of learners, providing variety and access to different FE sport provision for those students who would like to take part in running, cycling and multisport activity is a priority for our organisation.”
