Welsh Colleges Football provides both international football and coach education pathways for male and female students in FE Colleges in Wales. Football has the largest number of participants in regular competition with 28 male teams and 13 female teams involved in WCS competition.
The Men’s and Women’s national teams play against opposition from the UK and overseas including Australian Schools, Scottish Students and the ECFA. For 2014 the men’s team has also been invited to the prestigious Lazio Football Association international tournament in Italy for the first time, the squad will be flying out in March to take part in a full week of elite European football.
WCS football has been central to the development of the innovative Focus College programme in partnership with the Welsh Football Trust. The programme allows colleges to become approve centres for football and coach education. The support of this programme currently produces over 400 new “Football Leaders” every year in Wales.
Increasing participation is a focus of the WCS Football programme, particularly for Women’s football. A new “flexible format” has been introduced for colleges in 2014/15, allowing colleges running Women’s football teams to compete in 11v11, 7v7 , 5v5 etc depending on their capacity. This format has seen over 150 players competing from 14 colleges across Wales, providing quality competition for all involved – including two historic wins over visiting Australian teams!
